9/14: The county has called on all Boulder designers, architects, building contractors who would like to offer their services to Fourmile Fire victims to a brownbag/brainstorming informational session. The meeting was in an effort to form cooperative relationships between design/building professionals and the County so that we can best help our clients affected by the fire.

For those who are starting to explore the option of rebuilding, the County is busy trying to address the current code for nonconforming structures that had be damaged by natural disasters and the process of rebuilding. The current code is below. We hope to be able to post the final revisions to the code later this week.

Code as is:

4-1002 Nonconforming Structures
A nonconforming structure which has been damaged or destroyed by causes outside the control of the property owner or their agent, may be restored to its original location, floor area, and height, provided that such restoration complies with the current provisions of the Boulder County Building Code

  1. Such restoration must be commenced within six months after the date on which the nonconforming structure was damaged or destroyed and completed within one year after the date on which the restoration was commenced.a. These times may be extended for a reasonable period, if approved by the County Commissioners at a public hearing upon a showing of extraordinary circumstances by the property owner or their agent.
  2. The provisions of this Section 4-1002 (D) shall not apply to substantial improvements to structures in the Floodplain Overlay District as provided for in Section 4-400 of this Code.
  3. Restoration meeting the requirements of this provision are not required to undergo a Site Plan Review. (See Article 4-802 (B) (3)

The 15th Street Design District has come together in an effort to help the victims of the recent devastating fires. Our architects, building contractors, designers, and sustainable design consultants want to make our expertise available to the Boulder County residents affected by one of the most damaging fires in Colorado history. We understand that this is a sensitive time for the Four Mile Canyon Residents and the overall Boulder community and want to respect the grieving of those who have lost their home. We also want to support those who ready to rebuild. Our main intent is to establish a support system for those in need. We will be providing up-to-date information and resources for the victims as we have.
